US Embassy Project – Black History Month 2022
During February, students from Gimnazija Vič were given the opportunity to work on several projects which had been put together as a result of cooperation between our school’s English department and representatives from the Embassy of the United States of America.
Students from 1st and 2nd year classes worked on a presentation of the famous “I have a dream” speech by Martin Luther King. This project involved them taking the time to find out more about the speech and the context in which it was given, learning and rehearsing their own performance of part of the speech, and then presenting it on video.
Our students appreciated the opportunity to consider the powerful language used throughout the text and the chance to perform it for others so that the message could be shared even further.
At the end of the month, we were honoured to have a special guest, Ms Phaedra Gwyn, from the American embassy, who gave a presentation about the civil rights movement. Due to current public health restrictions, this took place online and students from 3rd and 4th year classes were allowed to take time out of their regular schedule to listen to the informative and engaging lecture. As well as learning more about the history of this movement, they had the chance to see how some of the most important ideas have been presented through different elements of culture.
We would like to thank Ms Phaedra Gwyn for taking the time to deliver this presentation and Ms Charlotte Taft for working with our school’s English department to organise the different elements of the project. We hope that there will be many such occasions for our institutions to cooperate again in such valuable ways in the future.
