KarMUN Conference – March 2023
From 8th to 11th March 2023, three of our students from the 3rd and 4th years of Gimnazija Vič attended a Model United Nations conference at Karinthy Frigyes Gimnázium in Budapest.
Model United Nations (MUN for short) is a type of debate where participants advocate for their assigned countries’ interests. They are divided into different committees with each one dealing with a different issue. This includes topics such as the Western Sahara dispute, access to education in conflict and post-conflict areas, and the concerns regarding political stability in Iran.
MUN is an incredible chance for delegates to develop many skills including public speaking, writing (formally written policy statements must be submitted), researching abilities, and their use of English, as it is the official language of the conference.
After a 6-hour bus ride to Budapest, the delegation from Gimnazija Vič was warmly greeted by their hosts. Then they set off to the city centre to the opening ceremony which was held in the Hungarian parliament.
The next three days were full of fruitful debate, with each of the committees coming to a resolution containing suggestions on how to solve or at least alleviate the conflicts at hand. The conference ended with a closing ceremony which included the presentation of commendations for different individuals and teams. We were delighted at the news that two of our students would receive awards for Best Delegate in their committees.
