IATEFL video competition 2025

Since the start of the school year, a group of second-year students from our school worked hard on their entry for the annual IATEFL Slovenia video competition.

The group involved Polona Larisa Perman, Jan Rac, Izak Roderik Štemberger, Timotej Tonin, Pria Vidmar Nair from 2F. We are delighted to say that all their effort and enthusiasm has led to an excellent result as the group has been awarded a gold level prize and named as the top entry for all of Slovenia.

The project involved working on a script, producing a short video, and then completing all the editing. In addition, they had to consider aspects such as background music, costumes, filming locations, and anything else that might have an impact on the quality of their finished film.

When working for the competition, the students had to keep the set of rules in mind. This included working within a strict time limit, making sure their standard of English is excellent throughout, and having words from a specific list within their video.

This year, the theme for the competition was “A million forms of art” and the final video had to take the format of an interview involving different artists.

The words that had to be included in their script were atrocity, ambiguity, sonder, unveil, levitate, discombobulate, colossal, integral, indispensable, and awe-inspiringly.

The group worked closely with their project mentors, Blanka Klobučar and Tim Gallagher, from the start with the script undergoing several rewrites as they worked to make the video interesting while also using the compulsory vocabulary in a natural way. When filming began, there were other occasions to get feedback and help when working on things like camera angles, sound quality, and working towards the final edit.

The students enjoyed working together and appreciated the chance to boost both language and technical skills during their time on the project, which is clear from part of their final report:

The process of making the video was a long journey but we really liked the topic of art since it is very diverse and it gave us a lot of freedom to explore our own ideas. We enjoyed writing the characters and then seeing them come to life. We had a chance to experiment with makeup, wardrobe, and staging and, most importantly, we had fun.

Congratulations to all of the students for this excellent result and thank you to the project mentors for their hard work and dedication while working with the group through the year.
