IDPD 2018
Since the International Day of Persons with Disabilities was proclaimed by the UN in 1992, 3rd December has had special significance in the calendar in terms of promoting the rights and well-being of those in society who live with disabilities every year.
In 2018, the theme for IPID was named as “Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality” and aspects of this idea were used by the Gimnazija Vič UNESCO club in coming up with activities and projects to mark this occasion in our school.
The main event on the day was a lecture given by Ms. Karmen Kopušar, an interpreter of Slovenian Sign Language. In a very interesting lecture, our students were told about the experiences of the deaf community in Slovenia, how things have changed in society over the last generation for those with hearing issues, and the history of Slovenian Sign Language.
This was followed by a workshop in which students were able to talk about their own experiences of dealing with people around them who have issues with hearing loss and deafness and learn some basic expressions in Slovenian Sign Language.
With this opportunity to broaden our knowledge of history, society, and communication, we would like to thank those involved in the UNESCO club for their work in putting together this event and the other projects connects to this important occasion.
